Signed copies of The Screwed-Up Life of Charlie the Second

If you're looking for a signed copy of The Screwed-Up Life of Charlie the Second before the September 5, 2008, reading at Women and Children First, there are signed copies available at a number of stores in Chicago, but I personally recommend going to Unabridged Bookstore in Lakeview. It's an amazing bookstore...

How much do you want to bet they blame prescription drugs?

Why Think? Clearly, Palin doesn’t want to…

Time Magazine is reporting that Republican VP Candidate Sarah Palin tried to ban books when she was mayor of herpodunk, armpit-of-Alaska town. Librarian.net also lists the books she tried to ban. If this turns out to be correct, it's terrifying. A VP who wants to ban Shakespeare, Twain, Faulkner, and the...

What’s a YA novel? What’s an “adult” novel?

What’s a YA (young adult) book and what’s an adult book? I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. The Screwed-Up Life of Charlie the Second was published as an adult novel, but some reviewers and libraries have categorized it as teen fiction. On the other hand, my friend Stephanie Kuehnert‘s wonderful new book,...

This looks like it would be fun

Some brilliant guys figured out a way to hack drive thru windows--theoretically from miles away. In this video, they show you how to do it.

More Fast Food hijinks

She only ran, because he looks like Charlie Brown. Best line: the one about it being a phobia like being afraid of snakes.

Some people have too much time on their hands

OK, so I was bored and typed "clown" and "Jesus" into YouTube's search box, and lo, what do I behold but this.

Seriously, if you weren't terrified of clowns before, you will be now.

At least it didn’t hit the fan…

From the AFP: "GENEVA (AFP) - A giant inflatable dog turd by American artist Paul McCarthy blew away from an exhibition in the garden of a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a greenhouse window before it landed again, the museum said Monday..."

More disturbing news from the world of fast food

Why does the realm of fast food have to be so creepy? Seriously, it took me a very long time to get used to the idea of "The King."

And now this:

Can we just go back to the criminals?

Sure, she didn’t…but when it sells millions

Is it just me or does this seem like a very carefully orchestrated PR campaign?

Sherry Jones's novel, The Jewel of Medina, which may or may not have something to do with a wife of Muhammad, gets pulled because of concerns it may be "a declaration of war" against Islam. It's all so very 1989 to me. Time to...

Another reason Max Brod was no friend to Kafka

Kafka portrait

If you're like a lot of my friends, you've got a postmortem contingency plan. It doesn't deal with wills; it's about having a living friend beat a fast track to your home or apartment and getting rid of certain things that, despite your being dead, you still wouldn't want the family to...

An interesting last name…

Apparently, the folks at Focus on the Family do this nifty little editing job on news articles that include words they don't like. WTF? I don't know. I don't imagine that many of their members can actually read and the ones that do probably do so only with great difficulty, a finger under the words and rebuses...

Food and Crime

Has anyone else noticed lately that there have been a few fairly eerie stories regarding criminals and the fast food industry. For instance, back in July, Tamien Bain, who was convicted for holding up a McDonald's at gunpoint and served around 14 years for the crime, took fourth place honors in penning a Big Mac...
